Comedians or naturally humorous people in social conversation are entertaining because they surprise listeners with something they say.

While, in the context of academic writing, inserting a few carefully chosen words of humor at exactly the right moment without sacrificing the integrity or flow of the paper will certainly go a long way in helping win over your readers.
